Most visitors to Ghana require a visa prior to arrival. The process is straightforward, but should be started well in advance.

Visa Application

Apply 6-8 weeks before your travel date through the Ghana Embassy website or nearest consulate. The standard tourist visa costs approximately $60-100 USD, depending on your country of origin.

Required Documents

You’ll need a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay, a completed application form, passport photos, proof of accommodation, and a return ticket. We can provide an invitation letter to support your application if needed. Just let us know.

Health Requirements

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for all travelers. Make sure to get vaccinated at least 10 days before arrival, as you may be denied entry without proof of vaccination.

Accra is served by Kotoka International Airport (ACC), a modern facility located in the heart of the city.

Direct Flights

Several airlines offer direct flights to Accra from major cities worldwide. From the United States, Delta and United operate direct flights from New York (JFK). From Europe, British Airways (London), KLM (Amsterdam), and Lufthansa (Frankfurt) offer direct services. From the Middle East, Emirates and Qatar Airways connect through Dubai and Doha respectively.

Booking Tips

Flights to Ghana tend to be fullest during holiday seasons (December-January) and summer months. We recommend booking at least 3-4 months in advance for the best rates and availability. Set price alerts on platforms like Google Flights or Skyscanner for good deals.

Airbnb Options

Many guests find Airbnb to be a more affordable alternative, with numerous properties available in East Legon and surrounding areas. These can be particularly good for guests planning longer stays or traveling in groups.

We strongly recommend booking your accommodation as soon as you've confirmed your flights. December is high season in Ghana, and accommodations fill up quickly.

Ghana enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. December is one of the most pleasant months to visit, with minimal rainfall and comfortable humidity levels.

What to Expect

In December, you can expect daytime temperatures of 24-32°C (75-90°F) and evening temperatures rarely dropping below 21°C (70°F). There's typically very little rain during this period, with clear skies and plenty of sunshine.

Packing Essentials

Clothing: Light, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are ideal. Pack casual daytime wear, one or two light sweaters for evenings, and appropriate attire for the ceremony events (details in your invitation).

Sun Protection: The Ghanaian sun can be intense. Bring sunscreen (SPF 30+), sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat for daytime activities.

Insect Protection: While December isn't peak mosquito season, it's advisable to bring insect repellent with DEET and consider lightweight long sleeves/pants for evenings.

Ride-Hailing Apps

Uber and Bolt operate extensively throughout Accra and are our recommended options for safety, convenience, and fair pricing. Download these apps before your arrival. A typical ride within East Legon costs 15-25 GHS ($2.50-4 USD), while traveling across Accra might cost 30-60 GHS ($5-10 USD).

Local Taxis

Traditional taxis are abundant but require negotiation before entering. They're identifiable by their orange/yellow fenders. Always agree on the fare before starting your journey, and expect to pay similar rates to ride-hailing services. Note that most local taxis don't have air conditioning.

Rental Cars

We generally don't recommend renting cars unless you're familiar with driving in Ghana. Traffic can be challenging, and navigation isn't always straightforward. If you do prefer to drive, international agencies like Avis and Hertz operate at the airport.

Currency

The Ghanaian Cedi (GHS) is the local currency. As of March 2025, $1 USD equals approximately 15.50 GHS, but we recommend checking current exchange rates before your trip as this can fluctuate.

Cash & ATMs

ATMs are widely available in Accra, particularly in malls, hotels, and bank branches. Most dispense cedis only. Major banks include Ecobank, Standard Chartered, and Stanbic, with daily withdrawal limits typically around 5,000 GHS. Inform your bank of your travel plans to prevent card blocks.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard are accepted at upscale hotels, restaurants, and larger stores, particularly in Accra. However, smaller establishments, markets, and taxis typically require cash. Always carry some cash for everyday purchases and transportation.

Currency Exchange

You can exchange currency at the airport, banks, or authorized forex bureaus (often offering better rates than hotels). Major foreign currencies like USD, EUR, and GBP are easily exchanged.

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory in Ghana. For good service, 5-10% at restaurants is customary. Hotel porters typically receive 5-10 GHS per bag, while tour guides might expect 50-100 GHS per day depending on the service.
